The Return of Cheng...

US Minors:
R - I missed this yesterday, but Chi-Hung Cheng made his seasonal debut on Monday (7/30) in the GCL. Limited to ~ 30 pitches, Cheng threw 1.1 innings and allowed 1 run on 1 hit, allowed 2 walks and a WP. Box
Cheng injured his shoulder last October, which required surgery to repair a torn labrum.

R - The Red Sox lost to the Pirates 4-3 in extra innings. CH Lin was 2-5 with a RBI, but more importantly, continued to flash his cannon of an arm by collecting 2 OF assists. Box

A ss - SA Kuo is pitching for Tri-City. The game is in the 1st inning. Box

A - Wisky lost 2-1. KH Lo was 3-4. Box

A+ - Kinston won 2-0. Tseng picked up win #4 as he threw 5 shutout innings - giving up 3 hits to go along with 3 K's and 1 walk. Box

AAA - Vegas is down 1-0 in the 2nd inning. Hu is currently 0-1 - he's facing former ML'er Chan Ho Park. Box
The MLB trade deadline has come and gone and Hu is still a Dodger - it looks like the organization will keep Hu as the long-term replacement for Furcal at SS. Hu will have some competition in the future from Ivan DeJesus - the highly-touted 20 year old.

NPB:
The Tigers prevailed 4-3 over the Swallows. WC Lin was 2-4 with a triple. Box

The Giants lost 5-1. Chiang pitched 2 shutout innings in middle relief - he allowed 1 hit and had 3 K's. Box

CPBL:
Whales 4 - Lions 3: The SP from both clubs were locked down in a tight duel that saw both players earn a ND. Wei-Lun Pan failed to win his 13th game of the season as he allowed 2 runs on 3 hits over 5 innings. For the Whales, Lorenzo Barcelo also earned a ND as he allowed 2 runs on 8 hits over 7 innings. Powering the Lions were: Tilson Brito who hit HR #26 (1-5) and KC Kao who was 2-4 with a double. The Whales Chin-Shou Shih earned game MVP honors for driving in the GW run in the bottom of the 9th - he came in the game as a PH.

Elephants 8 - Cobras 1: The Elephants received a strong starting performance from Yong-Chieh Yeh who won his 4 game of the year. Yeh pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing 5 hits. He received plenty of run support from: game MVP Huai-Shan Chen, who hit HR #4 and was 2-5 with 3 RBI's, Chia-Chia who was 2-4 with a double and a RBI, and 2B Po-Jen Yang who was 2-4 with 2 RBI's. A - Wisky won 6-1. KH Lo was 1-2 with 3 walks, 2 SB's - he now has 23 SB's on the season. With 34 games remaining, Lo has a good chance to reach the 30 SB mark - the last Taiwanese minor leaguer to do it: CFC in 1999. Box

2)August 3rd - Friday: vs. Mexico at 5 PM
3)August 4th - Saturday: vs. Redlands at 8 PM

Should Taiwan win it's bracket, it would play in the championship game on Sunday August 5th at 1 PM
Map of the RC Epicenter

Taiwan is looking to defend its title after winning last year's PWS championship in Puerto Rico. For those of you that live in So Cal, come out and support the kids! Tickets cost $8 - which covers all of the games in the day and parking is free. Jiayo!!

Wang Picks up Win #12....

MLB:
Staked to an early 4 run lead, Wang was able to hold on, despite another so-so performance from the young man. CM Wang pitched 6 innings against the Orioles and allowed 3 runs on 9 hits - to go along with 4 walks and 1 K. For the second start in a row, Wang exhibited problems with his command (it also didn't help that the ump seemed to be calling a tight strike zone) and allowed almost as many fly balls vs. ground balls (7-8). Fortunately for Wang, the Yanks offense would come up big again as they snapped a three game losing streak to defeat the Orioles 10-6 on Sunday. With today's win, Wang is now 12-5 on the season with a 3.61 ERA. Box/Recap

Amateur:

Tuesday Happenings....

MLB:
If things hold up the way they are now (Yankees up 9-4 in the 8th inning), Wang will pick up his 11th win of the season. CM Wang didn't have his best stuff tonight, but his offense did come through for him against the KC Royals. In the 6 innings Wang pitched, he allowed 4 runs on 7 hits - to go along with 3 K's and 2 walks. The stat of the night that stood out was the fact that Wang actually allowed more fly balls (8) than ground balls (6). Box

In the 10 games at AAA, Hu is hitting .500 in 42 AB's. Aside from the impressive power numbers he's put up so far (3 HR's, 12 RBI's), Hu's most impressive stat might be the fact that he has only 1 K at this level (and 2 walks) - Hu's strike zone judgement has been phenomenal - he was one of the toughest guys to K among the Southern League batting leaders - K'ing once in nearly 10 AB's at Jacksonville this year.

CPBL:

The Red squad beat the White squad in the 2007 CPBL All-Star game by an 11-3 count. 4)Wei Kao was 1-3 with 2 RBI's

Other:
Talk about some serious BS - it's been brought to my attention that the kids who will represent Taiwan in Williamsport ate nothing but Instant Noodle for all their meals while they were in Hong Kong. Due to a lack of subsidized funding from the government, these 11-12-13 year olds kids really couldn't afford much else. I hope the government hasn't forgotten that the LLWS did help to put Taiwan on the map in the eyes of a lot of Americans. *updated*

Tough Loss for Wang......

MLB:
Well, it had to happen some time. CM Wang took his first loss in nearly 2 months. Despite leading 2-0 (and allowing only 3 hits through 6) heading into the 7th inning, Wang ran into some bad luck in the 7th - a slow roller that stayed fair, a ball hit off of Wang's ankle, all led to a big inning for the Blue Jays as they rallied for 3 runs on 4 hits in the inning. Wang's final line of the night: 7 IP, 3 ER, 7 hits, 3 K's. Wang falls to 10-5 on the year. Final tally: Blue Jays 3 - Yankees 2. Box/Recap 1 Recap 2

US MINORS:

Chun-Hsiu Chen In the News...

Per Taiwanese news reports, Chun-Hsiu Chen is currently in the US working out for ML ball clubs. Chen, who recently graduated from high school, was the top offensive prospect/power hitter in his graduating class (that includes Che-Hsuan Lin). Chen, currently 18 (DOB: 11/1/1988) is solidly put together - standing 6'1" and weighing in at 190 pounds.

In high school, Chen received more press as a pitcher - and rightfully so, since he was one of the better pitchers on the island. Chen was a member of the 2006 junior NT and despite an 0-2 record/4.66 ERA in Cuba - he did manage to shut down the US junior NT (whose batting lineup included 2007 MLB 1st round picks: M.Moustakas #2, J.Vitters #3, & M.Dominguez #12) in an exhibition game last September - throwing 5 innings allowing 1 unearned run on 4 hits to go along with 5 K's and 2 walks. However, what left most observers scratching their heads was the fact that Chen's bat was underutilized at the World Junior Baseball Championships. In limited AB's - used mostly at 1B/DH, Chen actually led the junior NT with a .417 BA while slugging .500.

Chen's best tool is his power potential (he has good bat speed)- he also has the ability to hit for average. Currently, C.H. Chen's power is better at this stage in his career as compared to former Dodger slugger Chin-Feng Chen as an 18 year old. Chen also has a strong arm - as a pitcher he clocked 88-89 mph consistently on his fastball with flashes of 91-92. Here's a look at Chen's batting stroke in HS: Having primarily pitched in HS out of necessity because of the fact that he was the team's ace (he has also played 1B/3B/C), Chen is currently brushing up on his catching skills - he has experience playing that position as a youth. Chen's soft hands, plus arm, and quick release will serve him well in that position.

Tuesday Minor League News...

US MINORS:
AA - Although selected to play in the Southern League All Star Game today, Hu will not be participating because of yesterday's obligations in SF.

A - Lansing won 11-5. Keng picked up save #2, throwing 1.1 shutout innings. Box

A - Greenville lost 7-6. Chiang doubled in his last at bat, driving in 2 runs to help tie things up in the top of the 9th. That was Chiang's only hit in 5 AB's - he also committed his 6th error of the season. Box

A ss - Tri-City is losing 1-0 in the 2nd innings. SA Kuo is starting for Tri-City. Game Log/Box

R - GCL action: Red Sox 12 - Reds 5 > A lot of Taiwanese kids in action, CH Lin was 1-3 with a triple, 2 walks. CH Huang was 0-1 and committed his first error of the season at 3B. Facing the Red Sox was TK Chiu, who earned the loss in the game. Chiu threw 4 innings, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits - he did have 5 K's/1BB. Box

R - Bristol won 5-3. PY Lin earned victory #3, throwing 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits. Box

LLWS:
As mentioned in the comments section, China withdrew from the LLWS - Asian/Pacific Regional. So Taiwan will get 2 days off before facing off against SK and HK. I assume that July 13th will be left open for games that are potentially rained out earlier in the week. The team with the best record will advance to the championship game. Should there be a tie, the team with the lowest RAR # (Runs Against/Innings Played?) after pool play will play the Pacific Champions on July 14th. In this scenario, the only must-win game for Taiwan is HK, it can still advance to the championship game as long as its pitching staff keeps the scores down against SK and HK. Of course, a sweep would be ideal!
