Tourney MVP Kuan-Yu Chen

All-Star P Hao-Chun Chiu

Rong-Hao Hsieh

All-Star CF Hsiao-Yi Kao

All-Star DH Jui-Hua Yang

Taipei County (Ban-Chiao) defeated Taoyuan County 3-1 in the championship game, thus avenging last year's 2-1 loss. Despite tossing 3 shutout innings in the semifinals yesterday (gave up 1 hit and hit a high of 90 mph), Rong-Hao Hsieh started the game and lasted 3.2 innings (giving up 1 run on 5 hits), before he was replaced by tourney MVP - Kuan-Yu Chen. Chen completed the game, throwing 5.1 scoreless innings (allowing 1 hit and K'ing 5). Prior to the championship game, Hsieh had thrown 16 cumulative innings in the tourney, giving up 3 runs (only 1 was earned).

Hao-Chun Chiu (clocked consistently in the high 80's - topping out at 89 mph) started for Taoyuan County and managed to tame Taipei County's offense for the most part (7.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R) - unfortunately the defense behind Chiu committed 4 costly errors - leading to Taipei County's 3 runs.

Taipei County (BC) was undefeated - going 9-0 in the tourney and blitzed through the field - scoring 80 total runs in the YS Cup.

Taitung County defeated Tainan County 3-1 to take 3rd place in the tourney.

Hence, the NT's backbone will be made up of players from Ku-Pao High School. The junior NT roster should be made available tomorrow.

Yu-Shan Cup Brief...

Yu-Shan Cup:

The Final 6

What was once 18 teams has now been whittled down to a field of 6 in the Yu-Shan Cup. The remaining teams are:

1)Taoyuan County
2)Taitung County
3)Kaohsiung City
4)Tainan City
5)Yilan County
6)Taipei County (Ban-Chiao)

One of the tourney pre-faves - Taichung City was knocked out early - as noted by Jackson over at EWC (EWC also has a nice interview explaining where the hell Bears slugger Gary Burnham is - read more here).

I'll be shocked if Wei-Da Su (barring injury), who was on the Taichung City roster, is not selected to the junior NT.

Taipei County (team's roster is entirely from Ku-Pao HS), the odds-on-favorite to win it all, is looking to avenge a poor showing in the Taiwan Cup and play like it did when they won the 2007 National HS Wood Bat Tourney.

*In other news, NT coach Hong will be on a whirlwind tour throughout the US this month through July to check out how the kids are doing stateside. His tentative schedule was released by the CTBA:
6/15 - Arrive in Los Angeles
6/16 - Check out Chin-Hui Tsao at a rehab center in LA
6/17-18 - Check out Chih-Hsien Chiang & Kuo-Hui Lo in Lancaster, CA (Mavs vs. Jethawks)
6/19 - Check out Yung-Chi Chen (& now Chin-Lung Hu) in Las Vegas, NV (51's vs. Rainiers)
6/20-22 - Check out Ching-Lung Lo in Tulsa, OK (Drillers vs. Cardinals)
6/23-24 - Check out Hong-Wen Chen in Burlington, IA (Bees vs. Chiefs)
6/25-26 - Check out Chi-Hung Cheng & Po-Hsuan Keng in Lansing, MI (Lugnuts vs. Loons)
6/27-29 - Check out Sung-Wei Tseng in Akron, OH (Aeros vs. Phillies) - (Does coach know something we don't? Last time I checked, Tseng was struggling in Kinston, NC)
6/30-7/1 - Check out Po-Yu Lin in Hagerstown, MD (Suns vs. Blue Claws)
7/2-3 - Check out Che-Hsuan Lin in Greenville, SC (Drive vs. Sand Gnats)
7/4-5 - Check out Yen-Wen Kuo & Chun-Hsiu Chen in Tampa, FL (Winter Haven/Sarasota)
7/6 - Leave Tampa, FL for Holland (to watch the collegiate NT compete in the Haarlem Baseball Week Tournament)
