The Fukuoka Connection...

Fukuoka Daiichi High School - the history of Taiwanese kids attending this HS goes back several years - with the most famous Taiwanese alumni being Chung-Shou Yang, the Fighters #1 draft pick in 2005. LHP Heng-Hsiao Kuo was another talented prospect who until suffering a probable injury, was considered a top pro prospect.

Taitung County's Hsin-Shen jr HS will be sending 2 more baseball players to Japan for HS this year. They will be attending.............you guessed it - Fukuoka Daiichi HS. Last year, Hsin-Shen jr HS sent the top pitcher from its graduating class - RHP Hong-Chen Wang (6'3''/132 pounds/ tops out at 85 mph) to that school as well.

Hanshin Tigers OF Wei-Chu Lin attended nearby Yanagawa HS, located in Fukuoka Prefecture. Speaking of Lin, he's expected to be back in action sometime in June.

Geographically, it all makes sense as Fukuoka (southwestern part of Japan) is only several hundred miles away from Taiwan (to its north east).

Other News:
An update to this list - Samuel Fu is no longer with the White Sox organization.

Pitching Showdown in the CPBL.....

CPBL:
Bears 2 - Lions 1: Trailing by a run for most of the game, the Bears would rally behind the impressive performance of starter Mike Johnson and Hao-Chu Tseng's 2-run bomb in the top of the 8th, to pick up a full game on the league leading Lions.
MJ combined with reliever Jermaine Van Buren to 1-hit the Lions. MJ (he's now 8-0 on the year) allowed 1 run on 1 hit in 7 innings (while K'ing 4 and walking 9!). JB threw 2 scoreless/hitless innings, K'ing 3 and walking 1.

The Plot Thickens....

I posted a roster of the youth NT late last night. The team that won the recently completed youth national tourney (the Hsieh Kuo-Cheng Cup) was from Taichung - specifically Shi-Yuan jr HS and HS kids. Lefty Yu-Hung Lee is from Shi-Yuan jr HS - and he wasn't listed on the Taichung roster.

The youth NT is missing the best youth pitcher (under 16) in the country for the simple fact that the Taichung (& Shi-Yuan jr HS) head coach - Wu-Hsiung Huang got to select the youth NT. He omitted Lee from the roster because in all likelihood, Lee is headed to Japan (with the Yomiuri Giants) some time in June. This is an illustration of what J. Broder was talking about in his article regarding teams hiding players.

Memorial Day Recaps...

CPBL:
Bulls 4 - Lions 3: Down 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th, the Bulls would respond by tying things up and then pulling ahead with SS Chung-Nan Lin's GW hit - he was 2-4 with a RBI. For his heroics, CN Lin was selected the game MVP.
Bulls starter Jose Espinal earned a ND despite an impressive performance - allowing only 1 run on 6 hits in 7 IP - to go along with 8 K's and 3 BB's. Also earning a ND for the Lions was SP Chih-Chiang Chang who gave up 2 runs on 5 hits in 7 innings of work. Earning the victory for the Bulls was reliever and NT star Chien-Fu Yang. Yang pitched a scoreless 9th, allowing 1 hit and K'ing 1 to help improve his record to 2-3 on the year.

Offensively for the Bulls:

Another MLB Signing?.....& CL Huang Update.........

The Atlanta Braves are rumored to have signed a kid out of Taiwan, their second foray into the island since signing RHP Chen-En Hung in 2006.
Catcher Meng-Hsiu Tsai, who recently turned 18 (DOB: 5/13/1990), has been scouted by Jeremy Chu and Phil Dale. The kid stands 6'0 tall and weighs ~194 pounds. He bats and throws righty. Tsai attends the National Tainan Marine & Fishery Senior Vocational School. He is a good defensive catcher with an average arm but below average hitting technique.

Prospect Watching.....

In addition to the Junior World Championships this summer, we'll have a lot to look forward to with the the Little League and Pony international competitions. Despite the intense media coverage given to the LLWS by ESPN and ABC nowadays, the Pony organization's competition should be the one we pay more attention to when it comes to identifying future talent.

Take a look at the big names who've participated in the LLWS vs. Pony Baseball over the past 20 years:

1989 - Ming-Chieh Hsu (Seibu Lions) LLWS runner-up
1990 - Chin-Feng Chen (ex-LA Dodgers) LLWS champs
1991 - Wei-Chu Lin (Hanshin Tigers) LLWS champs
1996 - Chih-Hung Cheng (Toronto Blue Jays) LLWS champs
1996 - Chao-Kuan Wu (ex-Seattle Mariners/Cleveland Indians) LLWS champs
2000 - Che-Hsuan Lin (Boston Red Sox) Pony (11-12) champs
2000 - Sheng-An Kuo (Colorado Rockies) Pony (13-14) champs
2000 - Ching-Lung Lo (Colorado Rockies) Pony (13-14) champs
2005 - Yao-Wen Chang (Seattle Mariners) Pony (13-14) champs
2005 - Tzu-Kai Chiu (Cincinnati Reds) Pony (17-19)
2007 - Yu-Hung Lee (Yomiuri Giants) Pony (13-14)
2007 - Chia-Chu Chen (Boston Red Sox) Pony (17-19) runner-up
*Updated

Notice a trend? The most talented players from Taiwan are now participating in the Pony Baseball organization. Perhaps RHP Chao-Min Wang from last year's LLWS squad can continue to develop his game and buck the current trend; but the glory days of seeing dominant teams from Taiwan in the LLWS are over.

The Pipeline to Japan Continues....With Yu-Hung Lee

YH Lee

Another top young pitching prospect from Taiwan is heading to Japan. Following in the footsteps of phenom Yi-Hao Lin, lefty Yu-Hung Lee will reportedly join the Yomiuri Giants after his jr. HS graduation in June.

Lee, who plays at Shi-Yuan jr. HS, was the star for Taiwan during last year's Pony League World Series. The Puerto Rican PWS coach paid Lee the highest compliment possible when he said that Lee was a future major leaguer. Just like Yi-Hao, Lee who tops out ~ 86 mph, had his deal negotiated by his jr HS coach Wu-Hsiung Huang and Taiwan PE College head coach Hua-Wei Lin. Lee reportedly received a ~$100K signing bonus.

Here's YH Lee's site. The 15 year old (DOB: 2/22/93) lists himself as 6'0" tall and 175 pounds.
