Kuan-Yu Chen To Sign With BayStars...

*Here's some more details about Chen's contract with the BayStars.   He will receive a ~ $210K signing bonus and earn $60K USD annually.
Per his agent, Ku-Pao HS head coach Ming-Tang Tsai, Chen's contract states 2 things:  1)his team can't modify his delivery unless Chen agrees and 2)anytime the national team needs him, the BayStars must let him participate.

*Hong-Chih Kuo is expected to earn ~ $2.1 to 2.5 million for this upcoming season.

*A baseball player from Taoyuan Agricultural HS was booted off the team after testing positive (via urine analysis) for the drug ketamine.

*Softbank Hawks LHP Yao-Hsun Yang is also seeking a similar path to the US ala Wei-Yin Chen of the Dragons.  Yang wants to be a free agent so that he can have the opportunity to play on the world's biggest stage, in the majors.

Lefty Kuan-Yu Chen to the BayStars?

*Amateur lefty Kuan-Yu Chen is likely to sign with the Yokohama BayStars.   His signing bonus would approach ~ $300 K.     Chen had worked out for Yokohama not too long ago and was being pursued by the Yomiuri Giants & Chunichi Dragons.
The BayStars were also interested in Chen's amateur teammate Yu-Ching Lin.

*In other NPB news, the Orix BlueWave are interested in CPBL veteran star Bulls RHP Chien-Fu Yang.  Yang was the most impressive NT pitcher at the Asian Games.

*In the final poll for 2010, the IBAF has Taiwan in the 5th spot, behind world leaders: Cuba, US, South Korea, and Japan.

*Taiwan defended its Asian "A" little league level championship (5-peat) with a 4-1 win over Japan in the championship game.  Chun-An Wu cracked a HR for the NT.

*A team from Kyoto, Japan won the Chu-Lo Cup (12 and under) tourney in Taiwan.

*Former Taiwanese little league star, Tung-Jung Wu (now at National Physical Ed U. in Taiwan) has a partial ligament tear in his elbow.

*CPBL NEWS:
-The President Lions released IF Sen Yang and P Yi-Cheng Tsai.
-The Elephants will pay CPBL rookies Sung-Wei Tseng 160 K NT/month and Chi-Hung Cheng 135 K NT/month.
-The Sinon Bulls may be sold to the Ta-Rong Cargo Delivery/Moving Corp?
-Lions C Chih-Kang Kao and Elephants C Chun-Chang Yeh are spending their own money to train at the Indians' ST camp beginning 1/17 for a month.

*Here's a great series on Taiwanese HS players in Japan with the aim of playing in the sacred Koshien Tournament:

*Life After Baseball?
-Former pitcher Shih-Kui Huang, who is now the pitching coach at Chinese Cultural University, is the only coach with a PhD degree from the US currently in Taiwanese baseball.
-At 25, former Yomiuri Giant and NT RHP Chien-Ming Chiang is out of baseball and currently working in a jewelry store.

Bronco Reps Set.....

Taichung City won the TOTO Cup, earning the right to represent Taiwan in the Bronco Division (12 and under) of the Asia-Pacific Tourney. The tourney will be held on home soil, in the city of Taipei from July 18th - 23rd.

Taichung City's Tsung Lin fired a 2 hitter in the championship game against Kaohsiung County (a 6-0 victory) to earn tourney MVP honors. His teammate Shih-Peng Chen had the highest BA (.571) and most wins (2 W/3.00 ERA) in the tourney.

Speaking of Little League/Pony (Bronco) Baseball, the IBAF is pushing for a little league level (12 and under) world championships next year. The timing of the event (conflicts with the current Little League and Pony organizations regional and championship tourneys) may make it difficult to put together a true national team for participating countries.

*Here's a nice read on C Chun-Hsiu Chen. He's having a breakout season this year.

*Bad news regarding P Chia-Jen Lo - he has a UCL tear (although not severe enough to require TJ surgery).

*The Yu-Shan Cup (HS tourney) has kicked off (began 5/24th). The winner will be crowned June 6th.

*
KY Chen
In the Spring Collegiate Tourney, LHP Kuan-Yu Chen (playing for Taiwan Beer) has been the story of the tourney - throwing 36 innings without allowing an earned run. Although he earned a ND yesterday (28th), he threw 6 shutout innings against the MeiFu Giants, allowing only 1 hit to go along with 3 K's and 4 BB's in his team's 1-0 win.

HIGHS: 3-Peat for the Lions........ & LOWS: Another CPBL Scandal

CPBL:
Taiwan Series:
10/22 Thurs/Game 5: Elephants 5 - Lions 4 (10): game MVP: Kuan-Jen Chen 1-5, GWRBI in the 10th

10/24 Sat/Game 6: Elephants 5 - Lions 4 (17): game MVP: Chia-Rui Mai 5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 4 K's, 3 BB's

10/25 Sun/Game 7: Lions 5 - Elephants 2: game MVP: Kuo-Ching Kao 1-4, 3 RBI

*The Lions have now won back to back to back championships - unfortunately for the team there is no Konami Cup to prove where it belongs on the Asian stage.

Scandals now becoming the norm rather than the exception in the CPBL:
There are new allegations regarding games being fixed in the CPBL. Allegations involve several big names in the CPBL, including former MLB player Chin-Hui Tsao, ex-Seibu Lion Chih-Chia Chang, Bulls slugger Chia-Hsien Hsieh, and former Red Sox farmhand and Bears reliever Kevin Huang. Several former and current players from 3 clubs (all but the Lions) are under suspicion for their involvement in the scandal.
Read more here and here.
Will they ever learn from past mistakes??!!

NPB:
CLCS - Stage 2:
10/22 Thurs/Game 2: Giants 6 - Dragons 4: WY Chen L 3.1 IP, 5 R, 9 H, 3 K's, 1 BB

(Dragons eliminated 3-1. The team will look to resign Chen to a 1 year deal.)

Other:

*The Yomiuri Giants are hosting 6 Taiwanese university players who will be practicing with the nigun team at the EOM. Of those 6, the two most well known players are RHP's Keng-Hao Chang and Chih-Lung Huang (the Giants have followed Huang's career pretty closely).
The Baystars will be hosting former HS stars Kuan-Yu Chen and Wen-Hao Cheng also later this month.*Updated

Tough Day on the Field.....

A few brief blurbs:

*At the LLWS, the boys faced a dominant lefty from Mexico before falling short 3-2, despite being one-hit (WH Sung's solo shot in the 6th) in the game.
Box
The team will now face a dangerous and exciting team in Curacao in one international semifinal on Thursday (ESPN 4 PM EST).

*At the Asian junior "AAA" championships, the junior NT lost 6-3 to South Korea in its opening game.

*WY Chen earned a ND despite allowing only 2 runs over 9 innings while K'ing 10.

*Former Ku-Pao HS LHP Kuan-Yu Chen turned down a $80,000 NT/month salary (a 1 year contract with no signing bonus) from the BayStars; he's currently being pursued by agent Chien-Chen Chen (Eric Chen).

2009 Ta-Tung Cup Player Notes....

Some observations regarding this HS tournament:

Kao-Yuan won the championship game.
EWC's own JB at the tourney.*Updated

Several of the more heralded players had very disappointing showings and saw their stock fall a bit after this tourney:

INF Fu-Lin Kuo--his father and agent Kelvin Lee had been seeking $250-300 K; he showed no average tool at all, batting less than .200 in the tournament with no power, and struggled mightily against mediocre pitching; one international scouting director commented that at most, FL Kuo is worth a couple thousand dollars!

2B Ping-Chieh Chen--Bros Sports had raised his asking price to $300 K after an outstanding performance in the December Wood Bat Tourney. But like FL Kuo, Chen also struggled against mediocre pitching, batting less than .200 in the tourney. He still showed good running speed but demonstrated why his bat is questionable and inconsistent. A couple of teams came just to see him but he certainly disappointed the teams big time.

RHP Chia-Ming Huang--he's got all the potential in the world with his size, smooth delivery and decent makeup but he seems to have lost his velocity since last fall; he had one short outing in which he topped out at 86 mph. He's still only 17 but his time is running out if he wants to get signed after high school.

LHP Kuan-Yu Chen--he's lost 25 kg over the past 6 months and now weighs only 70 kg! Some have suggested that he has a medical condition that is unknown to the public at this time which has yet to be confirmed but this is quite concerning. His velocity is also significantly down while his command and breaking pitches aren't as sharp as before.

-Player that saw his stock rise--none other than INF Wei-Da Su; he hit .700 in the tournament showing a good stroke and demonstrating why he was the #1 positional prospect coming into high school. However the issues with him are still unresolved - there's the unstable family background, not playing all out at times (especially his base-running skills), and lacking a defensive position. The NYY might certainly increase their offer through scout Ken Su but will Su's father actually sign without seeing cash in front of him?

News and Updates - UPDATED***

*After a break-out year in the NPB, Chunichi Dragons LHP Wei-Yin Chen is receiving a huge increase (nearly 6X) in his salary. He made 6 million yen last year and will now receive 35 million yen (~ $366 K USD) in 2009.

*Reviving a rivalry from nearly a decade ago, the Taiwan-South Korea University Baseball Invitational kicked off. The Taiwan Sports University (also known as NCPES/NTUPES) sent two teams representing its Taichung and Taoyuan campuses. Former Blue Jay farmhand, Chi-Hung Cheng pitched for the TSU-Taichung team and threw 5 innings, allowing only 3 hits, K'ing 4, and gave up 1 run. He topped out at 86 mph. After he left the game, the South Korean school would rally for 4 runs to end the game in a 4-4 tie. Also playing in the game for TSU were C Chun-Hsiu Chen (Indians) - he had 2 hits and 2 RBI, OF Chao-Ting Tang (Tigers) - he had a hit, and RHP Hsin-Hong Tsai (almost a Cubbie) - allowed a hit.

TSU-Taoyuan won its game 13-3 in 7 innings.*Updated

*Ming-Chie Lin, a top 10 HS class of '09 player, continues to attract a lot of attention . UDN has reported that the Yankees, Red Sox, and Twins have been scouting Lin.

*MC Lin's teammate, P Yu-Te He has also attracted the attention of ML scouts (news reports cite the presence of the Twins scout at the game). He threw 8 innings against Ku-Pao on the 23rd. In that game, Ku-Pao's Wei-Chen Wang continued his hot hitting streak - he had 3 more hits, including 2 triples as Ku-Pao won 7-3.

*Former T-Rex/Cobras slugger Chia-Hsien Hsieh has volunteered on his own to participate in the WBC training session taking place 12/1 to 12/7. Also contrary to what was reported earlier, Red Sox farmhands Che-Hsuan Lin, Chih-Hsien Chiang, and Wang-Yi Lin will not be participating in the training session. Taking their places are Chia-Chu Chen (Red Sox), Chia-Jen Lo (Astros), and 22 year old (DOB: 3/19/86) C Cheng-Da Wu, who played HS and collegiate baseball (Suzuka International Unversity) in Japan. Next year, he will be playing for the Kishu Rangers of the Kansai Independent League - the same league that made news when it selected a 16 year old girl.

***NEW UPDATES

*Per their agent, former Blue Jays farmhands CH Cheng and PH Keng want to play overseas and are unlikely to consider playing in the CPBL next year.

*Gui-Shan elementary school won the little league division of the aboriginal tourney.

*Ku-Pao HS defeated Chung-Dao HS in the championship game of the senior level of the aboriginal tourney behind C Kuan-Ru Chen's 2 hits and home run and LHP Kuan-Yu Chen's 11 K's in 7 innings of work.

*Hsin-Shen junior HS won the youth division of the aboriginal tourney behind RHP Chia-Wei Yang, a kid with some upside (6'0" tall).*Updated

*Regarding the WBC and the NPB, the Hanshin Tigers are willing to allow OF Wei-Chu Lin to participate in the WBC. The Rakuten Eagles will also allow RHP En-Yu Lin to play in March.

*Some potential good news for the CPBL - the Taichung city government is considering getting its own pro baseball team.

*Two KBO and two CPBL teams will be training in Taiwan in February of next year.

*Much like Tiger Woods and GM, E Sun Bank is unlikely to continue its sponsorship/ad deal with Chien-Ming Wang because of the sad state of the economy.

Juniors Place 5th at World Championships.....

World Junior Championships:
Just like in 2006, Taiwan finished 5th at this year's World Junior Championships. Taiwan sealed the deal by beating the host nation Canada 11-4. SP Kuan-Yu Chen (here's his blog/album) earned the win while #3 and 4 hitters Yu-Hsiang Chen and Fu-Lin Kuo blasted the team's first and only home runs of the tourney (back-to-back in the 4th inning). Box/Recap/Final Team Stats
Meanwhile in the day's other action, South Korea defended its world crown by shutting down perennial power - the US, 7-0. Cuba garnered third place with a 6-2 win over Australia.

Fu-Lin Kuo

Yu-Hsiang Chen

Leading the way offensively for the team were infielders Yu-Hsiang Chen (here's his blog/album) and Fu-Lin Kuo and OF Yen-Ju Chen (here's his blog/album).

YH Chen hit .355 in 31 AB's with 1 HR, 4 2B's, 5 BB's, 3 SB's, 2 RBI's
YJ Chen hit .346 in 26 AB's with 2 2B's, 4 BB's, 6 SB's, 3 RBI's
FL Kuo hit .323 in 31 AB's with 1 HR, 1 3B, 3 2B's, 0 BB's, 2 SB's, 7 RBI's

Performance-wise, Che-Ming Su was the top pitcher for Taiwan.
In 20 innings, he had an 0.90 ERA, picked up 2 W's and a Save, while K'ing 19.

All-in-all, the team did fairly well (aside from getting slammed by Cuba), losing to the eventual champs by 1 run, avenging an earlier loss to Canada, and they did all of this with ace Rong-Hao Hsieh having perhaps the worst performance in his young career.

Redemption for Taipei County (Ban-Chiao)....

Yu-Shan Cup:
The Champs

Tourney MVP Kuan-Yu Chen

All-Star P Hao-Chun Chiu

Rong-Hao Hsieh

All-Star CF Hsiao-Yi Kao

All-Star DH Jui-Hua Yang

Taipei County (Ban-Chiao) defeated Taoyuan County 3-1 in the championship game, thus avenging last year's 2-1 loss. Despite tossing 3 shutout innings in the semifinals yesterday (gave up 1 hit and hit a high of 90 mph), Rong-Hao Hsieh started the game and lasted 3.2 innings (giving up 1 run on 5 hits), before he was replaced by tourney MVP - Kuan-Yu Chen. Chen completed the game, throwing 5.1 scoreless innings (allowing 1 hit and K'ing 5). Prior to the championship game, Hsieh had thrown 16 cumulative innings in the tourney, giving up 3 runs (only 1 was earned).

Hao-Chun Chiu (clocked consistently in the high 80's - topping out at 89 mph) started for Taoyuan County and managed to tame Taipei County's offense for the most part (7.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R) - unfortunately the defense behind Chiu committed 4 costly errors - leading to Taipei County's 3 runs.

Taipei County (BC) was undefeated - going 9-0 in the tourney and blitzed through the field - scoring 80 total runs in the YS Cup.

Taitung County defeated Tainan County 3-1 to take 3rd place in the tourney.

Hence, the NT's backbone will be made up of players from Ku-Pao High School. The junior NT roster should be made available tomorrow.
