Prospect Update: Wei-Chung Wang

Kaohsiung county LHP Wei-Chung Wang is attracting interest from MLB teams.  The 6'1", 170 pound youngster has a smooth delivery with a clean arm action.   Although his arm speed is just average, he is very projectable. Earlier this year, his fastball was in the low 80's but he has hit 88 mph quite a few times in the current Yu-Shan Cup; he has also flashed an above average changeup that he throws for a strike. Rumor has it that he is represented by Jerry Sung, and his asking price is $300,000. Octagon may be pursuing him too.
The 18 year old (4/25/92) is the younger brother of Cubs signee Yao-Lin Wang.

Cubs Sign Yao-Lin Wang.....

San-Hsin senior RHP Yao-Lin Wang becomes the first signing in '09 of an amateur player by a ML club. The Cubs inked Wang to a ~ $260 K signing bonus. The 18 year old (DOB: 2/5/91), who stands 5'11" and weighs 172 pounds has already passed his physical. He has been selected to this year's junior NT.

Wang is one of the hardest throwing HS pitchers on the island (clocked in the low 90's) and has represented the country in the past ('06 on the World Boys Baseball Tournament NT - that included teammate Wei-Da Su).

OTHER HS PLAYER NOTES:
*Word is that INF Ping-Chieh Chen has turned down a $300 K offer from the Cubs. The reason? He reportedly received pressure from his future college coach Hua-Wei Lin (forcing him not to sign).

*RHP Ming-Chie Lin will be attending Chinese Culture University and currently has no interest in playing pro baseball overseas.

Vid Game Highlights

Yu-Shan Cup:
Nan-Ying laid its claim to the most dominant HS baseball program on the island as it won yet another major HS baseball tourney title (last Yu-Shan Cup title was 6 years ago - won the Taiwan Cup in March, HS Wood Bat Tourney in December). Nan-Ying (Tainan City) defeated Kaohsiung City (San-Hsin/San Min HS) 7-0 in the championship game. Tourney MVP Keng-Hao Chang (clocked at a high of 91 mph) not only extended his scoreless streak to 58 innings, but he also defeated the tourney's other outstanding staff ace - Yao-Lin Wang (San-Hsin HS).

MILB:
*YW Kuo - looking good in BP

*CH Cheng 411: "Cheng doesn’t have the velocity to challenge hitters up in the zone, and Hillcats pitching coach Wally Whitehurst has repeatedly stressed that Cheng — and every Hillcat pitcher — attack the lower half of the zone.

“He’s got to understand who he is, and not what he thinks he is,” Whitehurst said. “Everybody likes to throw hard. Some people can and some people can’t. For the most part, he stays within himself and throws the ball down in the strike zone, and he produces a lot of weak swings. He needs to understand that and see that.”

Cheng hasn’t allowed a run in his last two starts. His future in the rotation is uncertain — LHP Bryan Morris continues his rehab in Florida and should be back with the Hillcats soon, and the Pirates’ brass will likely want to see what Morris, a former first-round draft pick, can do in the rotation.

*Indians C Chun-Hsiu Chen has hit 8 HR's so far in XST and is batting around .300

HS Tourney Notes....

*NY INF Fu-Lin Kuo was a disappointment despite making the all-tourney team; he hit poorly in the game against Chia-Yi HS, a team with subpar talent. Kuo is represented by Octagon's Kelvin Lee, who signed the kid through Nan-Ying HS coach Chen's assistance.

*Kuo's teammate - NY 2B Ping-Chieh Chen had an impressive tourney, regaining some of the lost luster to his top prospect billing. His only problem is whether he can stay at 2B with his lack of agility & range defensively. The Phillies scout in Taiwan spoke with the Nan-Ying HS coach about Chen, who is represented by Bros Sports.

*SY side-armer Po-Cheng Chi strained his shoulder in the tourney but despite this, coach Huang used him in the semi-final game. Not surprisingly, Chi got roughed up against Nan-Ying. His velocity in the tourney was 84-85 mph.

*SH RHP Yao-Lin Wang showed better command in his outing, flashing an average slider, and demonstrated good athleticism on the mound. His velocity was around 87-89 mph, topping out at 90 mph. It appears several teams might be interested in him including the Cubs, Mariners, and D-Rays.

***Congrats to both South Korea and Japan for making it to the championship game of the WBC. I guess it was "destiny" as Ichiro deemed it that the two Asian baseball powers would be the last two standing.

Monday News....

*If Taiwan can make it to the second round of the WBC (to be played in San Diego), it would get a chance to play against the Dodgers (and possibly face Hu and Kuo) and Padres in a warm up match (on the 11th and 12th of March) prior to the second round of the WBC.

*The NT kicks off its first warm up match against a select western Australian squad made up of players with US minor league experience. Hong-Wen Chen is expected to be the starting pitcher in that game.

Expected lineup for tomorrow's game:
1)RF Chih-Yao Chan
2)CF Che-Hsuan Lin
3)LF Chih-Hsien Chiang
4)DH Yi-Chuan Lin
5)3B Chih-Hsiang Huang

In the Ta-Tung Cup, San-Hsin senior Yao-Lin Wang was clocked at 94 mph on the stadium gun (in actuality the reading was probably closer to 91-92 mph). He pitched one inning. San-Hsin won 15-0 in 7 innings. Wang's teammate, LHP Hua-Wei Lo was clocked at 90 mph - he also pitched an inning. San-Hsin's pitching staff is loaded: including heralded players RHP Chia-Ming Huang and RHP Tzu-An Wang. Huang and TA Wang pitched the 6th and 7th innings respectively in the blowout win.
