Big game jitters....
Kuo struggled with his command on opening day for the Dodgers vs. the Braves. Kuo only pitched 0.2 innings, but after getting the first 2 batters out, Kuo walked the next 2 hitters. Brazoban then relieved Kuo and promptly gave up a double, plating the 2 runners Kuo had walked. Hence, Kuo got tagged with 2 earned runs. Box

Tough no decision for Lin....
Saturday, Lin pitched a gem of a game against Sadaharu Oh's SoftBank Hawks. Lin pitched 8 scoreless innings, giving up only 3 hits, and was in line for the win, when reliever Koyama blew Lin's 1 run lead. Boxscore

SI showin' our boys some love...
Well, I got my SI yesterday in the mail and whaddya know? The '06 Baseball Preview issue (4/3/06) had a couple of pieces on 2 of Taiwan's finest. See above.
Wang was selected by SI as one of the "20 people to watch for in 2006." Great compliment by SI. This is a good issue to own!
Wang named #3 starter.....
for the Yanks by Manager Joe Torre. Wang will be slotted behind the "Big Unit" and the "Moose."
As for Friday's game, Wang had an ok performance, going 4 innings, giving up 3 earned runs on 7 hits.
In the NPB, the Hanshin Tigers officially got their season underway on Friday. Lin got a pinch hit at bat in the 9th inning and grounded out.

The joke's on Hu?
Check out this funny actual conversation between Kuo and his teammate Kenny Lofton. I didn't know that Hu was still in Vero. Hopefully he doesn't have to start this season in A ball again.
Wang is scheduled to pitch Friday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Hopefully he feels no ill effects from the contusion he received on Sunday.

Kuo can do no wrong....
Kuo pitched a 1-2-3 5th inning against the Washington Nationals today. After getting the leadoff hitter to ground out, Kuo picked up 2 more K's against Damian Jackson and Nick Johnson. If Kuo pitches like this in the regular season, I can't see why he wouldn't be a top candidate for NL ROY.
In Japan, W.C. Lin made the Tigers ball club. Although he won't be a regular in the starting lineup, he at least joins Y.C. Lin of the Eagles as a bonafide NPB player. If C.C. Chang can regain some of his lost velocity, he would be a valuable contributor for his Lions team.
The Yang brothers and W.Y. Chen will all begin the season on their respective NPB farm teams.

Kuo: Top Dawg!
The Dodgers named Kuo the top rookie in camp this spring, by awarding him the Mulvey Award.
Kuo's performance (0.00 ERA in 10 IP, with 12 K's) was quite impressive, considering the fact that he had a disappointing showing in the WBC. All in all, the preparation and participation in the WBC probably helped Kuo bring it all together in time for spring training.

Kuo makes Opening Day Roster?
The official website of the Dodgers has reported that the team has cut several bullpen candidates.
Kuo was NOT one of them. Yea!!!! 2 of Kuo's primary competitors: left handed relievers Kelly Wunsch and Tim Hamulack were either reassigned or optioned to AAA. Kuo is almost a lock to make the team, as he is the only LHP among his penmates.
Should Kuo make the team, he would join Wang of the Yanks as a ML regular. If Tsao can make a full recovery, then we might see all 3 in the Majors come June/July. Can't wait!

Sunday Roundup and Red Sox Signings Updates....
The news out of Taiwan is confirming that the Boston Red Sox have signed 2 high school kids. In a follow up to an older post, the Sox signed two infielders: Chih-Hsien Chiang and Chih-Hsiang Huang. Earlier speculation had the Red Sox signing a HS pitcher: Wang-Yi Lin. Not too sure which signing (Huang or Lin) is correct, but the Chih-Hsien Chiang signing is confirmed. Chiang received a $375,000 signing bonus, while his high school teammate Huang received a $100,000 signing bonus. In addition to playing together at San Ming HS in Kaohsiung - Taiwan, Chiang and Huang were selected to the 2005 junior national team.

The NY Yankees received quite a scare today when Chien-Ming Wang was nailed on the knee from a ground ball comebacker. Before leaving the game, Wang had gone 2.1 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 3 hits, while K'ing 3. Reports have Wang's injury diagnosed as a contusion.
The NPB season has begun. Y.C. Lin pitched the season opener for the Rakuten Eagles against the Nippon Ham. Lin was greeted rudely in his debut as he was shelled for 4 runs on 6 hits in 4.1 innings pitched and took the loss.

The streak continues....
Kuo pitched 2 more shutout innings on Sat. against the Cardinals. He also picked up 3 more K's, giving him 12 K's in 10 IP this spring. Kuo is doing all that he can to earn that last bullpen spot against Franquelis Osoria.

Kuo takes loss....
On Wed. Kuo gave up his first run, in a 2-1 loss to the Mets. However, since the run was unearned, Kuo's spring ERA still stands at 0.00. Kuo is still in the running along with Kelly Wunsch to fill the 2 left-handed reliever spots in the Dodgers rotation.

Baseball America ranked the top WBC prospects under 25 years old based on their play in the WBC. Hu was ranked #4 overall behind some impressive candidates. Hu held his own (0 K's) against 4 MLB pitchers from South Korea and 1 future ML in Matsuzaka of Japan. He also played tremendous defense.
Based on the Asian bracketed games that I saw, I'm surprised that Nishioka of Japan wasn't mentioned. His game and skills are impressive for someone who is only 21 years old.

Tuesday News....
Pitching in a minor league game for the Yanks, Wang got rocked in a forgettable outing.
Kuo continued to shine for the Dodgers, as he pitched another scoreless inning against the Marlins.
In Japan, Lin got a pinch hit appearance against the Orix Buffaloes and grounded out.
Congratulations to Japan on winning the WBC! Goes to show that solid pitching, small ball, and a lil luck are recipes for success. Despite losing to Japan, South Korea had an outstanding tourney. Heck, they beat the WBC champs 2 out of 3 games. Hopefully, Taiwan can learn from their Asian counterparts and improve on this year's showing.

Dodgers in Action....(Saturday)
The Dodgers won 3 to 2 over the Tigers. The 2 Taiwanese kids represented themselves well. C.L. Hu started at SS and in 4 AB's, managed to get a hit (single). Defensively, Hu was in on a DP as well. Kuo pitched in the 7th and 8th innings, and was simply dominant. Kuo racked up 4 more K's and continued his scoreless streak. Box/Recap

Wang vs. Astros
In his 3rd preseason outing, Wang started and went 4 innings vs. the Houston Astros. Despite giving up 2 unearned runs on 5 hits, Wang had some difficulty with his command as 20 of his 50 pitches were out of the strike zone. Even so, Wang gave up no walks, had one K, and induced numerous ground outs. Box/Recap

Kuo Streakin'.........
Hong-Chih Kuo continued his scoreless steak by pitching the 8th inning against the Braves today. Kuo gave up 1 hit, 1 walk, had a wild pitch, and surprisingly - had no K's! Box
W.T. Lin is starting to heat up for the Hanshin Tigers. On Monday, Lin doubled in his only at bat in the 8th inning against the Yomiuri Giants. Tuesday, Lin got another token at-bat and again singled in a run in his only plate appearance vs. the Nippon Ham Fighters. Finally, today against the Seibu Lions, Lin managed to continue his hitting streak by singling in his final AB to raise his spring average to .296 .

Wang: SBD....
This article from the NY Post elaborates on the "Silent but Deadly" monikker given to Wang - a man of few words who believes in action speaking louder than words.

LA Dodgers Manager Grady Little has hinted that Kuo has the potential to be a solid starter for the ball club. Assuming that Kuo stays healthy, let's not forget that Kuo started off his pro career as a starter. It will be interesting to see how the Dodgers use Kuo this year.

Preseason news....
Kuo pitched a perfect 1.1 innings against the Detroit Tigers today. He K'd 2 in his outing.

Yesterday, Lin went 1-3 for the Tigers vs. the Fukuoka Hawks in the NPB. Lin singled and scored a run in the 2nd inning. Interestingly enough, the Tigers have been experimenting with Lin by playing him at first base. Lin has not played that position since grade school.
Chih-Chia Chang, recovering from a previous injury, has lost a few miles off his fastball. Chang, who used to throw in the low 90's to high 80's, has only been clocked at a high of 85 mph this spring.

3rd in Asia.....
Well, considering the level of pitching that they faced against SK and Japan, I'd say that I'm pretty proud of the Taiwanese ball-players. Taiwan finally got their bats going against inferior pitching, crushing China 12-3. It was an important statement game for Taiwan vs. their political nemesis, as Taiwan had narrowly beaten China 3-1 in the 2003 Asian Games.
More impressively, US minor leaguers - Hu and Chen got their bats going as they collected nearly half (7) of the team's 15 hits. Chen hit a key grand slam, the first in WBC history, in the 4th inning to break open a close game at the time. Check here for boxscore and recap.
19 year old Yang has a bright future ahead of him; he was obviously overmatched this time around, but the kid has a great frame to build upon and is a good athlete. If he learns to hit the breaking ball, watch out.
Looking at the future of this ballclub, I'm pretty excited. The next WBC is going to be held in 2009. Defensively, the majority of the IF is set. 3B Chen and SS Hu are both only 22. 2B Yang is only 19. 1B Lin is the old man of the group at 24. In addition to playing great defense, these guys have the ability to contribute on the offensive side of the field.
The OF's if healthy should be in their prime in 3 years. C.F. Chen is 28, W.T. Lin is 27, and C.M. Peng is 27 as well.
Veterans Chang and Hsieh, who provided offensive firepower this year, could serve as DH's in the near future.
Pitching wise, a healthy Wang, Tsao, and Kuo would form a potent 1-2-3 combo. If Chih-Chia Chang ever returns to his old form, he'd be another important starter. En-Yu Lin showed why he is the top young arm in the CPBL. He clearly outshined the other 2 recent NPB signees - Y.C. Lin of the Eagles and Y.H. Yang of the Hawks. The key here would be the development of more quality arms in the next 2-3 years to give the team more depth.
Good luck to Japan and South Korea as they advance to the 2nd round in the WBC. Represent Asia well!!

Defensively, the majority of the IF is set. 3B Chen and SS Hu are both only 22. 2B Yang is only 19. 1B Lin is the old man of the group at 24. In addition to playing great defense, these guys have the ability to contribute on the offensive side of the field.
The OF's if healthy should be in their prime in 3 years. C.F. Chen is 28, W.T. Lin is 27, and C.M. Peng is 27 as well.
Veterans Chang and Hsieh, who provided offensive firepower this year, could serve as DH's in the near future.
Pitching wise, a healthy Wang, Tsao, and Kuo would form a potent 1-2-3 combo. If Chih-Chia Chang ever returns to his old form, he'd be another important starter. En-Yu Lin showed why he is the top young arm in the CPBL. He clearly outshined the other 2 recent NPB signees - Y.C. Lin of the Eagles and Y.H. Yang of the Hawks. The key here would be the development of more quality arms in the next 2-3 years to give the team more depth.
Good luck to Japan and South Korea as they advance to the 2nd round in the WBC. Represent Asia well!!

Debut of Yang....
The 19 year old is starting at 2B and hitting in the 9 hole for Taiwan vs. China. I'm excited to get my first good look at him tonight.
Total Domination....
The Japanese NT showed why it is one of the best teams in the world. I watched most of the game in the early morning and saw one heckuva batting lineup. Matsuzaka might not have been his dominant self, but he was still throwing nasty breaking balls mixed in with his 92-93 mph cheese.
Japan's hitters 1-9 all showed that they could stroke the ball, exhibiting power, patience, and a good eye at the plate. Tonight's matchup between South Korea and Japan should be a dandy, but I can't see South Korea beating this team.

Hyping up Wang...
The Yanks continue to lavish praise on Wang, citing his potential to be a #2 starter behind Randy Johnson. Wang, who recently agreed to a one year deal worth close to $400,000, is scheduled to be the #3 starter for the series opener vs. the Oakland A's.
In relations to the WBC, having Wang on the team might not have made a huge difference for the Taiwanese NT. With the strict pitch limit, Wang at most, might have been able to pitch 4 innings vs. South Korea. For the next WBC, this is one rule change that must be made. You can't have a true international baseball tournament with a pitching limitation restriction. In regards to Taiwan's future, if Wang, Tsao, and Kuo all can stay healthy, and with the development of a few new arms, the potential for greatness is there.

Win or go home........ Taiwan is in a must win situation if it wants any chance at making it to the US. However, Taiwan find itself in a huge hole and playing the role of David against Japan's finely tuned Goliath. Without 2 of their better pitchers available, Coach Lin will need some type of miracle to stymie Japan's potent offense and pray that the game is in reach once Matsuzaka reaches the 65 pitch limit. I fully expect to see Taiwan's only major leaguer, Kuo, pitch maybe 2 innings if things are close.

CT vs. SK in game update...
***South Korea has struck first, with a run scoring double by catcher Hong, putting SK up 1-0 in the top of the 4th inning.

Role of the underdog....
Well, upon seeing both national teams compete against his Lotte ball club, Bobby Valentine feels that the South Korean NT has the upper hand. The SK NT defeated the Lotte Marines 7-2, pretty much after the same Lotte team had defeated the Taiwanese NT 6-3. Despite the games only being exhibition matches, the SK NT demonstrated that it has superior pitching depth as well as ample power compared to what Taiwan is able to throw out on the field.
Assuming a win vs. mainland China and a loss to the Japanese NT, the game vs SK is of the upmost importance to Taiwan advancing to the next round. With tomorrow's key game upon us, Taiwan will definitely be in the role of a huge underdog against a very good SK team. However, the way the WBC is set up, you only need to be good enough or lucky enough to win on any given day. With that said, don't rule out Taiwan's chances of making it to the next round.
I'll be watching the game via tape delay, so for those of you watching the game live, feel free to keep us updated as to how our boys do.

Preseason NPB...
Lin blasted a 2 run HR for the Tigers in an 11-4 win over the Orix Buffaloes on Sunday. Lin hit cleanup and started in LF for his club.
There has finally been a Chih-Chia Chang sighting! The Seibu Lions pitcher came on in the 7th inning against the Fukuoka Hawks. Chang pitched 2 scoreless innings, with a K and a BB as the Lions and Hawks played to a 4-4 stand still.

Courtesy of Maos, the NT beat the LA New Bears 8-1 in their final tuneup before heading to Japan. Hopefully the offense is able to carry over some of that momentum against their Asian opponents in the WBC.
Hong-Chih Kuo officially joins the NT today. Kuo was in Vero Beach, site of the Dodgers ST camp, fighting for a roster spot as a LH reliever.
CT will most likely face Japanese ace, Daisuke Matsuzaka of the Seibu Lions, although the pitcher was roughed up a bit in a recent warm-up game vs a NPB select squad. Matsuzaka has been dominant in his past matchups vs. CT's hitters. In '99, during the Asian preliminaries to determine Olympic berths, Matsuzaka pitched a complete game vs. the CT squad, giving up only 1 run while K'ing 13 batters. In the 2003 Asian championships, Matsuzaka pitched 7 innings vs. Taiwan and K'd 12 hitters, while only giving up 3 hits. Who got the only hits for Taiwan? You guessed it, Chin-Feng Chen and Cheng-Ming Peng, our absentee 2 big guns. Essentially, Daisuke overpowered the majority of CT's hitters.

NT wins vs. the Sinon Bulls
The NT's offense finally got it going as they steamrolled the Sinon Bulls 8-2. Chih-Sheng Lin continued his hot hitting and led the way with a HR. C.S. Lin, who played well in the Australian series, is being mentioned along-side with W.T. Lin as possibly being the clean up hitter for the NT.
C.C. Hsu, S.W. Tseng, W.M. Chu, and P.H. Keng pitched for the NT. Tseng, Chu, and Keng all pitched scoreless innings. Tseng was clocked as high as 92 mph, while Chu and Keng were clocked at 89-90 mph.

CT NT vs. LA New Bears
The CT NT was held to a 0-0 draw by the LA New Bear pitching staff. The NT only managed to get 6 hits, all by the heart of the order with Yung-Chi Chen leading the way with 3 hits, followed by Tai-Shan Chang with 2 hits, and Chia-Hsien Hsieh with 1 hit. Chih-Sheng Lin played for the LA team and collected 2 hits.
Without C.F. Chen and C.M. Peng, one of Taiwan's biggest question marks is where will the offense come from? Thursday's game only muddled the concerns with the team's ability to generate timely hits and runs.

It's official.....No Chen.....
Chin-Feng Chen along with Chien-Ming Wang have officially declined participation in the WBC. Hmmm, let's see, that means 4 of Taiwan's most talented players will be absent in the premier inaugural baseball event. No Chen, No Tsao, No Wang, and No Peng = slim chances of advancing out of the first round. However, in light of the bad news, Taiwan has surrounded a fairly young team with good veteran talent from the CPBL. For the youngsters, the WBC will provide them with invaluable experience and help gauge their progress against some of Asia's top talent.

Finally, Hanshin Tiger Wei-Tsu Lin has been looking good in spring training. In Tuesday's BP, he drilled 8 HR's in 64 swings, and is batting cleanup during intrasquad scrimmages. With the possible absence of Chin-Feng Chen, the South Korean media is already focusing on Lin as being the main offensive weapon for Taiwan.

In Ichiro's own words, "I want to play games that make the other teams think they won't be able to beat us (Japan) for the next 30 years." The other teams refer to Taiwan, South Korea, and of course China. Ichiro must've forgotten that both Taiwan and South Korea have beaten Japan on the world stage. I hope Coach Lin posts that quote on the chalk board. If that doesn't fire up the players, I don't know what will.

Red Sox sign 3 kids from Taiwan???
Well, per the official press release from the Red Sox website, the Red Sox have signed 3 players from Taiwan in 2005.
Although there has been no official release from the Red Sox about the players names, we do know that one of the guys is DJ Yeh. Speculation is that the 2 other kids are still in HS and have verbalized an agreement to sign with the Sox after they graduate from HS. The 2 kids are Chih-Hsien Chiang and Wang-Yi Lin, a RHP.

Yankees in Control....
Well, with the exception of A-Rod and Jeter, the majority of international players wearing the pinstripes have declined participation in the WBC. Jorge Posada joins Hideki Matsui, Mariano Rivera, and Wang as Yanks who've just said No to the WBC.

Whew, been gone only for lil bit, but lots of news to report.
First of all, I got to hand it to all the moms and dads out there. Being a parent is one heckuva job - taxing, tiring, but rewarding and fulfilling at the same time.
Ok, back to baseball news:
The words straight outta C.M. Wang's mouth indicate that he will NOT participate in the WBC. That's bad news for the NT, but great news for anyone in the upper brass of the NY Yanks organization. Link
With Wang's announcement and the completion of the recent series in Australia, the NT has made some roster changes. Pitchers C.M. Wang and C.H. Cheng have been replaced by Ying-Feng Tsai and Wei-Yin Chen. Tsai pitched well against the Australian NT while Cheng got rocked in his outings, demonstrating poor control. Coach Lin has decided to go with 5 OF's, as C.M. Peng has also been removed from the roster (will not be ready in time from injury recovery). In his place, Coach Lin has decided to add another pitcher to the roster, Yueh-Ping Lin.
Speaking of the series in Australia, here are the final stats for how our boys did over there. In an 8 game series against the Australian NT, CT split the series against good competition. Y.C. Chen and C.S. Lin led the way for Taiwan's offense. It was good to see CPBL pitchers, C.M. Chu, Y.F. Tsai, and C.F. Yang do well. A lot of these guys will have to step up their game in the absence of Wang.
Also, Bigdaub posted a link to a great read on the Saga of Chin-Feng Chen - and how he was never given a reasonable chance by the Dodgers organization to show what he could do in the majors. Thanks for sharing that!

CT lost to Australia in game 4 of the series 11-10. Despite the loss, Taiwan's key hitters got the ball rolling: C.S. Lin, Y.C. Chen, and C.L. Hu all blasted HR's for Taiwan.

CT finally wins one vs. Australia...
Game # 3 vs the Australian NT was a much better performance by the CT NT. CT won 5-3 behind strong pitching support from CPBL pitchers Hsu and Chu. US-based pitcher, Chi-Hung Cheng struggled in the 2/3 of an inning that he pitched. Taiwan's offense also finally came to life, as it outhit Australia 9-3, with Chih-Sheng Lin and Yung-Chi Chen leading the way. Lin cracked the 1st HR for CT in the current Australian tour.

It looks like Ching-Lung Lo will not be available as an alternate for the NT. Reports have the Rockies denying Lo permission to participate in the WBC.

Close loss to Australia....
The CT NT lost a close game to Australia 1-0. Chien-Fu Yang pitched a good game going 7 innings and only giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits. However, Yang was unable to get any run support from CT's hitters. Chu and Keng each pitched 1 scoreless inning to keep CT in the game.

More on CT NT game vs. Perth
During last night's 6-4 loss to the Perth Heat, starting pitcher Sung-Wei Tseng was impressive, going 6 innings and only giving up 1 earned run. The following pitchers, Chi-Hung Cheng and Chia-An Huang struggled and gave up the lead back to Perth. Cheng went 1.1 innings and gave up 3 runs, while Huang only pitched 0.2 innings. Closer Wei-Ming Chu did give up an earned run in the last inning, but did manage to strike out the side. Hitting stars for CT were: Tai-Shan Chang, Yung-Chi Chen, and Ching-Lung Hu.
For tonight's game against Perth, Coach Lin plans on starting Ying-Feng Tsai, followed by Chia-An Huang, Wei-Ming Chu, and Po-Hsuan Keng.

Why Taiwan is called Chinese Taipei.........
The WBC should be intended as a way of promoting the sport of baseball worldwide. Having China compete in the WBC is great for growth of the sport in the world's most populous country. I know that MLB would love to see a Chinese star in the majors. Bottom line: MLB views China as a huge untapped market.

In this case, Taiwan has been forced by MLB and China to cede it's name, it's flag, and it's national anthem during the WBC. This is nothing new to the people of Taiwan. Ever since the IOC's ruling in 1979 to recognize China (P.R.O.C.) as a member of the IOC, Taiwan has been relegated to the status of a "secondary citizen" and is forced to be recognized under the title "Chinese Taipei."
Every time I see Taiwan's unis - with it's Chinese Taipei logo - it reminds me of the socio-economic political clout that China uses to bully around it's island neighbor to the east.

ESPN Deportes - NO HABLO ESPANOL!!!!
Well in the United States, ESPN has garnered the TV rights for the upcoming WBC. However, the games will only be seen on ESPN 2 and ESPN Deportes, with the Semis and Championship game to be broadcast on ESPN.
CT's matchup with Japan will be shown on ESPN 2, but it's 2 other Asian regional matchups will be shown on ESPN Deportes. My cable company unfortunately only offers ESPN and ESPN 2, so I will only be able to catch the CT game versus Japan.

Kuo and Odds on Taiwan's Chances...
The Dodgers have given Kuo the green light to participate in the WBC. Having Kuo is a huge plus especially in light of recent rules established by the WBC to help protect pitchers' throwing arms. Taiwan needs as many quality arms as possible for this tourney.
The new rules state that in round one games (for Taiwan - the Asian regional), pitchers will be limited to 65 pitches, and if they pitch in excess of 50 pitches - will be ineligible to pitch for 4 days following the outing. Also a one day rest period is automatically implemented for any pitcher whose count goes over 30 pitches. Last but not least, pitchers are not allowed to pitch more than 2 consecutive days.
Those rules definitely reward teams that have a deep pitching staff, a luxury that Taiwan does NOT have. Taiwan's biggest problem is that if it is to advance deep in this tournament, it will need it's starting pitchers other than Wang (if he's allowed to play), to step up big time and keep the game in reach for it's hitters.
Surprisingly, Sportsbook.com has Taiwan as a 15-1 favorite to win it all. Essentially, Sportsbook.com thinks that Taiwan has the 6th best team in the world!!! The gambling website has the US and Dominican Republic as the 2 teams to beat, followed by Venezuela, Japan, Puerto Rico, our BOYS!!!, and then South Korea. I would be pretty stoked with a top 6 finish, considering all the talent out there.

CT NT to play Australia's NT
In preparation for the World Baseball Classic, Taiwan's NT will be traveling to Australia from Feb. 2nd to the 12th to face off against the Perth Heat and the Australian NT.

Slow times....
There's not too much to report during these slow times, but it appears that the Yankees are putting more pressure on Wang to not participate in the WBC because of past arm problems.
If that is the case, Ching-Lung Lo would probably be the first alternate called up to the 30 man roster. It seems as if Lo's been in the Rockies minor league system forever, but remember, he's still only 20 years old.
The majority of players for the NT have returned to their respective ball clubs in the US and Japan for spring training and will rejoin the team shortly before the WBC Asian regional begins in March.

There are a few players that I'm surprised were ommitted from this list:
1)Chih-Yuan Chen - OF : Has always been one of the better hitters/OF's in the CPBL
2)Wei-Yin Chen - LHP : Has NPB experience - great upside for a young lefty
3)Ching-Lung Lo - RHP : Probably would have been the most physically imposing player for NT/great upside
4)Chia-Hao Chang - SS/OF : His defensive versatility is a huge plus, plus he has a decent bat

NT Training News....
The NT has been holding scrimmages among a split squad - blue vs. white.
Overseas players: Lo, Chen, Cheng, Keng, Yang, and Chiang all got a chance to show their stuff. Overall, no one exhibited anything overpowering and there were some control issues.
Pitching notes:
Ching-Lung Lo has looked good - he was clocked around 90 mph.
Chi-Hung Cheng was clocked around 87 mph.
Po-Hsuan Keng accidentally plunked OF Kuo-Hui Lo, who was forced to leave the game with a bloody nose and a swollen left cheek.
Hitting notes:
With the lack of a "feared" established middle of the lineup hitter (Chin-Feng Chen and Chien-Ming Peng are both recovering from injuries) - the coaches have been happy with the hot bat of Wei-Tsu Lin.
He is getting a good look from the coaches to hit in the 3rd through 5th spots should either of the above-mentioned players be unable to play in the WBC.
Chun-Yu Kuo has also hit well in the scrimmages.

RIP Rod Dedeaux
I was saddened to hear that USC baseball coaching legend Rod Dedeaux passed away today. I had the honor of meeting him this past summer. Not only was he a giant in the US collegiate ranks, but he was a goodwill ambassador for the international game of baseball. I had the good fortune of watching the Taiwanese NT play this summer in Southern Cal thanks in part to Mr. Dedeaux's connections and his willingness to see the game become a bridge for different nations and cultures to share a common interest.

I still can't get over Chen not wearing some form of blue and white. Chen has officially agreed to a record-breaking deal with the LA New Bears. He gets a 3 year deal worth 10 million NT (~ $311,000 US dollars) annually.I'm surprised that Chen did not ask for at least 15 million NT/3 years - the amount offered to Taiwanese basketball superstar Hsin-An Chen by ETSN. However, the 10 millon NT/3 year deal does not include bonus incentives.

Yeh joins the Red Sox.....more on the way??
It has been confirmed that the Boston Red Sox have signed D.J. Yeh, a LHP for around an $80,000 US dollar signing bonus (bonus amount unconfirmed). Yeh became a controversial figure in Taiwan, when it became apparent that this year's CPBL #3 draft pick decided that he wanted to give the US minors a shot despite making himself available for the CPBL draft. Yeh became a hot commodity upon his return to baseball after a 4 year lay off from the game. Yeh, who had been scouted by several ML organizations in his HS days, was throwing around 92 MPH in his prime. Although recently his fastball has been clocked in the mid to high 80's range, the time off can only benefit Yeh and hopefully help avoid the arm problems that many Taiwanese pitchers have faced.
Several young HS baseball players in Taiwan are currently being scouted by several ML organizations during Taiwan's current HS national tourney. Led by the Red Sox, Braves, and Dodgers and their strong international scouting program, three kids have caught the eyes of these scouts. They are:
1)Tzu-Kai Chiu - LHP: DOB: 9/14/87 Stands 6'0 tall, weighs close to 200 pounds. Throws around 89 to 90 mph max. This kid has been on the youth national team scene for a while now. In 2003, he led Taiwan to the gold by beating both South Korea and Japan in the Asian Youth Championships. At the time, the Colorado Rockies were pursuing Chiu pretty heavily after establishing the Tsao and Lo pitching pipeline. Chiu was also on the 2003 World Youth Baseball Championship silver medal winning team. Chiu started the title game against the US, but took the loss in that game. Chiu then represented Chinese Taipei at the abbreviated 2004 World Junior Baseball Championships where he went 1-1 (W/L), had a 0.00 ERA and K'd 4 in 2.1 IP.
2) Hung-Chen Lai - another LHP: Mentioned in an earlier post - see the Nov. 25, 2005 post, the kid is an undersized (5'9") athlete, who projects to be a pitcher at the next level. Wang vs. Seo!!!!
In recently announced news, Jae Seo of the NY Mets has agreed to play for his country. In my opinion, this guy is the ace of a Korean pitching staff that includes 6 major leaguers: C.H. Park of the SD Padres, D.S. Koo & Seo with the NY Mets, Sunny Kim & B.H. Kim of the Col. Rockies, and Jung Bong of the Cincy Reds.
Seo is one of the favorites to start against Taiwan in the Baseball Classic opener March 3rd in Tokyo, Japan. In 2005 with the Mets, Seo had an 8-2 W/L record along with a sparkling 2.59 ERA. Check out the rest of his stats here.
In a must-win game for Taiwan, Coach Lin would have to counter with his team's ace: C.M. Wang - assuming that the Yanks give him the green light. H.C. Kuo would probably pitch in relief if and when Wang hits his targeted pitching count limit.

Well, the above scenario could happen if Taiwan manages to snag the #2 seed out of the Asian regional qualifying bracket. The matchup would be very memorable for the fans of Taiwan, although the Royals are one of the worst teams in the MLB.

Chen in the CPBL????
There is a good possibility that pioneer Chin-Feng Chen may play for the LA New Bears in the CPBL next year. Chen would join an up and coming team that already has slugger Chih-Sheng Lin and new pitching addition Kevin Huang. Chen has not given up on his dreams to play in the Majors, and probably would seek a clause in his contract that would allow him to pursue a ML position if the opportunity arose.

The waiting game....
While Japan and Korea have submitted very strong rosters for the WBC, Taiwan is still trying to get clearance for their top 2 pitchers: Wang and Kuo. Because both pitchers have a history of serious arm injuries, the parent clubs are reluctant to release these 2 kids (Read here for more on Wang and his status with the Yanks brass) for participation in the WBC. With injuries to top pitchers Tsao, Chang, and Hsu, the cupboard is pretty bare if the Dodgers and Yankees have their way. Also, the Taiwanese national team has not yet secured the services of top hitter Chin-Feng Chen whose professional career has come to a screeching halt. In past competitions against top pitchers from Korea and Japan, Chen was one of the few bright spots for an anemic offense.

Hu Chin Lung...
"The Dynamic Duo" - Hu and ChenHere's what BA wrote about Hu:
Background: One scout described Vero Beach's double-play combo of Hu and Abreu as "the traveling circus show" because of their penchant for defensive highlights. Hu finished second to Abreu in the Florida State League batting race, then hit .343 for Taiwan at the World Cup tournament following the season.
Strengths: While Abreu is a plus defender, Hu is off the charts. He's slightly undersized but wiry strong with outstanding body control and pure shortstop actions. His range is extraordinary, as are his hands, and his arm and speed are both above average. Hu made an adjustment at the plate, curtailing his leg kick, which improved his balance and prevented him from flying open during his swing. He has surprising pop, uses the whole field, and has a good feel for the strike zone.
Weaknesses: Hu has a tendency to bail on good breaking balls and he needs to become more selective. His small frame doesn't lend considerable room for projection.
The Future: Hu should be a .270 hitter with 10 home runs annually in the big leagues. Ticketed for Double-A, he should reach LA by the end of 2007.

Sayonara Lin????
Y.C. LinNow, word is the Rakuten Golden Eagles are close to signing lefty specialist Ying-Chieh Lin. Rakuten was also very interested in star rookie pitcher En-Yu Lin, but the Macoto Cobras were reluctant to part with both of their top pitchers. Sounds like only a matter of time before Lin becomes an Eagle!!!

Odds and Ends.....
OF Lin (Hanshin Tigers)
REUNION of sorts: Hu, Wu, and ChenTaiwan's infield of the present and future is bright with Hu at SS, Chen at 2B, and Wu at 1B. All three are under 23 years of age, and Hu and Chen have shown promise both on the offensive and defensive end of the field while playing in the US minor leagues. Wu has still yet to put together a healthy and productive campaign, but he has shown a promising bat. Factor in Yang - the 18 year old SS #1 pick of the Nippon Fighters, and you might have a solid foundation for the next decade.
OF Lin of the Hanshin Tigers is currently working on building his arm strength (throwing off the mound and long toss) to allow him to be more competent defensively in RF. In limited duty with the parent ball club, Lin flashed good wood. However, in order to get more playing time, he must improve his defensive abilities.
The talent level in Taiwan is self-evident and is reflected in the growing number of players signed to play in the US and Japan: As of today - 13 in the US and 7 in Japan. Who's next? Well in an earlier post, En-Yu Lin was mentioned as a possibility. Lefty Y.J. Lin of the Macoto Cobras is also seeking a new employer next year. With respectable numbers and demonstrating that he is one of the top pitchers in the CPBL, Lin hopes to take his game to the next level by playing in Japan. I hope both Lin's get their chance soon.

Amateur baseball updates.....
This past week, new national winners were crowned for infantile (11-12), high school, and adult - college aged divisions.
In the senior league (college) championships, the National College of Physical Education defeated Jiayi University by a score of 9 to 0.
From this division, names to remember for the future include: NCPE winning pitcher Chia-Chun Tang and Jiayi pitcher Che-Yi Su
In the junior (high school) tourney, PingZhen High School won the championship by defeating Hualien H.S. 5 to 4. Yilan beat Taitung 7 to 4 for third place.
Among the HS kids, names to remember include:
1)Hung-Cheng Lai (P) - throws lefty, HS senior, 5'9"tall, has been clocked at 90 mph, member of junior national team, a good athlete: reputed to have been timed at 11 seconds in the 100m dash, has been scouted by the Boston Red Sox
2)Wei-Da Su (P)
3)Jiang-Cho Chen (P) - 6'0 tall, junior in HS, clocked as fast as 90 mph
4)Chen-Hua Lin (P) - 6'0 tall, throws ~ 85 mph

Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Since I'm a huge college football nut (I root for Penn State, but I went to USC and The U - University of Miami), I'm always over on Scout.com checking out the latest news on these programs. The guys over at Scout.com are currently posting all of their premium content for free from now until Sunday the 27th. Where have you gone Kevin Huang?
Former Red Sox Chun-Chung (Kevin) Huang is finally going to get a chance to revive his baseball career. Huang will be playing with the LA New Bears in the CPBL next season.
After some limited success in the low minors with the Boston Red Sox organization (he made it to A ball), Huang was persuaded by his agent to showcase his wares for some NPB scouts. During this workout, Huang tore his labrum, and has been recovering ever since. The pitching exhibition was in violation of Huang's contract with the Red Sox, who then released Kevin.
That's one helluva lesson for any young man to take - lose your job and potentially have a career-ending injury all happen at the same time.
Despite all this, I'm still rooting for the kid to make a full recovery and succeed in the CPBL.

Rookie En-Yu Lin of the Cobras won the league MVP/ROY awards. The kid had solid numbers - a league-leading 1.72 ERA, a 12-8 W/L record, and 152K's. Lin also won a golden-glove award for his stellar defense. The 6'2"- 24 year old is hoping to get a shot in Japan, and may follow the footsteps of former CPBL ROY's - Ming-Chieh Hsu of the Seibu Lions and Chung-Yang Tsao formerly of the Chunichi Dragons.

The Seibu Lions are thinking of moving Chih-Chia Chang to the bullpen as a reliever next year. The move could prolong the career of Chang, who had his past season derailed by injuries.
Chin-Feng Chen got a look by the Rakuten Eagles organization in the NPB. Word is that Chen didn't fare very well in his workouts - i.e. struggling with hitting off-speed breaking pitches. With his options shrinking, Chen might give it one more shot at the MLB and hope for the best in spring training.

Lions edge Bulls
Sinon lost a close game to the KBO champs 4-3. In a tight game, the Bulls continued to shoot themselves in the foot with defensive miscues. However, despite the loss, the CPBL champs showed that they are on equal footing with the KBO champs.

In the championship game, the Lions lost to the Marines in a much closer rematch 5-3. Despite being outhit, the Marines continued to receive timely hitting from import and ex-MLB player Benny Agbayani. Benny drove in 9 runs in the 4 games that he played in.
Bottom line: KBO and CPBL have comparable talent. The NPB still has better talent overall - especially in their homegrown pitching products. The KBO and CPBL have to rely on export pitchers to round out their starting rotations. Not surprisingly, the best young talent in Taiwan and South Korea usually end up overseas in Japan and the US. There aren't that many players in the CPBL who would be able to make the jump to the NPB or US minor leagues. Bulls Dehorned.....
Da Bulls were pummeled by the Marines 12-1. The game only went 7 innings because of the mercy rule.
Bright spots, if any for the Bulls were
1)SP Chien-Fu Yang's 7K's in 5 IP and only allowing 2 ER's
2) & CF Chien-Ming Chang, who continued his hot hitting as he drove in the Bull's only run
The game against the KBO champs will dictate who plays Lotte in the championship game.

Bulls win vs. China
The Sinon Bulls beat an all star team made up of professional players in China's CBA league 6-0.
In the other game, NPB champs Lotte handed the Samsung Lions a 6-2 loss.

Sinon Bulls and the Konami Cup....
There's some news on the strategy the Bulls will go with regarding pitching matchups in a recent Taiwan News Online article. Interesting matchups - the game vs China should be a stroll in the park. Assuming a loss to the NPB champs, the game against the Samsung Lions would be a must win, if the Bulls want to make it to the championship game. I'm not really sure if Martinez or Yang would be a better matchup against the Lions - tough call by manager Liu. Too bad Chung-Nan Tsai isn't the same pitcher he was a few years ago - they could've used him.

Chin-Feng Chen is getting interest from the NPB Rakuten Eagles. Bigdaub over at the TaiwaneseBallPlayers.com discussion forum has a write up on the news. There is also info at the Japanesebaseball.com forum.
