Phillies to Sign OF CJ Lee.......
According to Taiwanese news outlets, the Philadelphia Phillies will be signing Leader University OF Chia-Jung (Rong) Lee. Lee, the #4 hitter for Leader U. will receive a comprehensive signing bonus (including tuition) of ~ $100 K. He would become the second Taiwanese player to sign with the Phils (Yen-Feng Lin was the first and is no longer with the organization).
The 21 year old does have some power; he led the Association Cup (back in November) in HR's. Here's a vid of him taking one out of the park (grand slam) in that tourney:
Vitals:
DOB: 11/3/88
H: 5'11"
W: 174
B:R/T:R
Wears # 99
*Leader U. lost today to TaiPower 3-1 in the College Cup. Performing well for TaiPower were former HS stars P Yi-Shan Deng (or Teng/8 IP, 1 R, 3 H) and SS Po-Ting Hsiao (had a few hits on the night).
*Former junior NT and Ku-Pao star RHP Keng-Hao Chang has decided that he will make himself available for the upcoming CPBL draft. He would be one of the top picks alongside En-Yu Lin.
*The Taiwanese government is planning to spend $62 million USD to "revive" the game. Related to this news is the fact that the CPBL will establish a free agency system (FA after 9 years of service in the league) and a player minimum salary (70 K NT/month) in 2010. That amount isn't too shabby when you consider the fact that the average monthly salary of a Taiwanese worker is 36.5 K NT/month.

Huang to the Giants.....
The Yomiuri Giants inked RHP Chih-Lung Huang to an ikusei contract for ~ $100 K.
There was speculation earlier last month that Huang was close to a deal with a pro team. It looks like Huang got his wish to play in Japan and the Giants nabbed a kid that they had been following for a while.

Association Cup:
The Taoyuan County Aerotropolis baseball team won the recently completed Association Cup. TYC defeated Leader University 10-0 in the championship game.

The WP in the championship game and tourney MVP - Hsien-Chih Chang (14.2 scoreless innings in the tourney & formerly of the T-Rex) combined with Chang-Wei Tu (formerly of the CT Whales) on the 4 hit shutout. The second place finish was Leader U's best showing ever in the tourney.
The Taipei County - Banqiao team defeated the MeiFu Giants (Chinese Culture U.) 2-1 in the consolation game.
2 million NT was awarded to the tourney's champs.
NPB:
Nice read on WY Chen

More Misc. News....
*The Dodgers are coming to Tainan, bringing back native sons HC Kuo and CL Hu to their old stomping grounds at Nan-Ying HS. Kuo returned home Wednesday.
*The Yankees will also be sending a catching coach out to do a camp in Taitung on the 19th. AIT (American Institute in Taiwan) is sponsoring the clinic.
*The Cleveland Indians made several moves in the Pac-Rim, firing Jason Lee - their Pac-Rim scout responsible for signing the 3 current Taiwanese kids in the system. SW Tseng and CH Chen had disappointing seasons (although Chen did flash potential in the Fall Instructional League) while CC Lee had a good first year debut in the US. A part time scout (perhaps current translator - Jason Lin?) will be hired to cover Taiwan.
*NPB News: Out of the Yokohama camp - LHP HC Lai will likely be offered an ikusei player contract - which Lai says that if that's the case then he'll turn down the offer (because of his age - 22 already) RHP WH Cheng and LHP KY Chen (who did not go to Japan - Yu-Ching Lin went in his place) both stated that they would consider accepting an ikusei contract if offered.
Joining RHP YF Lin (see below) in Yokohama will be former President Lions RHP Wei-Ming Chu (both will try out for the team) while lefty YC Wang continues to garner the most interest from the BayStars.
*A few big names are participating in the current collegiate tourney (the Association Cup) - former Phillies farmhand YF Lin has been clocked at 92 mph in a recent game. Former White Sox minor leaguer PY Lin threw well in his showdown with Chih-Lung Huang (was in the Yomiuri Giants camp not too long ago) yesterday. Huang gave up 4 runs (3 ER) in 2.2 IP.
*Some good news: Taiwan's Dept. of Education has decided that it will increase funding for student baseball.

BayStars to Sign a Lefty?
NPB:
La New lhp Yi-Cheng Wang is in the BayStars' fall camp (alongside 3 other Taiwanese pitchers). Apparently, the BayStars were impressed with what they saw and are interested in signing him.
Wang was a minor league player for the La New Bears this past season.
Here's his stats for this past season: 7 G, 1 W, 1 L, 5.93 ERA, 27.1 IP, 15 K's, 21 BB's
He was also a member of the NT that participated in this year's World Port Tournament, Asian Championships, & World Cup (listed as I-Cheng Wang).
Here's a brief scouting report on Wang (tops out at 91 mph/scroll to the bottom of the list).

Continuing their winning ways on the HS circuit, Ku-Pao won the Elite Golden Dragon Cup, defeating Kao-Yuan 4-1 in the championship game. Next Gen......
Elite Golden Dragon Cup (HS):
Playing tomorrow (the 3rd) in the championship game of the inaugural Elite Golden Dragon Cup (HS competition) are traditional powerhouses Kao-Yuan and Ku-Pao. Kao-Yuan squeaked by Nan-Ying 6-5 in one semifinal while Ku-Pao shutout Shi-Yuan 5-0 in the other semi.
There's an interesting story in the Liberty Times about two young prospects on the Kao-Yuan squad. Their family names are Pan & Lo.
15 year old (DOB: 5/26/94) Wei-Cheng Pan is the younger brother of Lions star RHP Wei-Lun Pan. The RHP/1B stands in at 5'11.
WC Pan
His teammate is Kuo-Lin Lo, the younger brother (youngest of 4 bros) of Mariners farmhand Kuo-Hui Lo. Lo, 16 (DOB: 1/2/93), is the cleanup hitter on the squad. The 5'10" youngster earned All-Star honors as the top DH in this past year's Yu-Shan Cup.
KL Lo
Both youngsters aspire to play in the US when all is said and done. In fact, WC Pan's brother has already advised his younger brother to go overseas, should the opportunity arise - not a very strong endorsement for the CPBL from one of the league's top stars.
In the 3rd place game are HS perennial powers: Shi-Yuan and Nan-Ying.
The winner of the tourney will receive a Mizuno pitching machine.

*The Yokohama Baystars are showing a lot of interest in LHP Hung-Cheng Lai (former '05 and '06 junior NT member). Lai, whose been clocked as high as 94 mph, is a good athlete - having run a 3.9 home to first time. Lai is in Yokohama alongside RHP's Yu-Ching Lin and Wen-Hao Cheng.

The Latest News....Tsao/Nakagomi Gone...
CPBL Scandal:
If the Elephants franchise survives this ordeal, it will undergo a significant face lift next year with the team roster.
FT Ni weighs in with his 2 cents.*updated
NPB:
One-time wonderkid Yi-Hao Lin was released by the Yomiuri Giants. You've got to wonder WTF happened here (in hindsight, the Giants failed to develop the phenom - tinkering with his mechanics & the advice he received from WH Huang and HW Lin to go to Japan didn't pay off) . Makes you ponder and think what if had he chosen the other route and decided to sign with a MLB team (in that scenario he would've received a lot more money - rather than the nominal $100 K he got from the Giants, and better development in the US).

Allegations involve several big names in the CPBL, including former MLB player Chin-Hui Tsao, ex-Seibu Lion Chih-Chia Chang, Bulls slugger Chia-Hsien Hsieh, and former Red Sox farmhand and Bears reliever Kevin Huang. Several former and current players from 3 clubs (all but the Lions) are under suspicion for their involvement in the scandal.

Chih-Lung Huang Update....
UDN.com is reporting that RHP Chih-Lung Huang may sign as early as later this month with a MLB or NPB club. Reportedly the Rangers, Mariners, as well as NPB teams (perhaps the Yomiuri Giants) all have interest in Huang. Huang began to display his trademark fastball (low 90's) in the Asian Championships as well as the recently completed World Cup - after suffering through some down years following his storied junior NT (high school) career. Huang himself, prefers to play professionally in Japan.

Yi-Chuan Lin: A Rookie Like No Other......
23 year old CPBL rookie Yi-Chuan Lin has had an unbelievable first year with the Sinon Bulls. With only a few games remaining in the regular season, the young slugger has shattered several rookie league marks and is chasing a few all-time league records in numerous offensive categories.
(As of 10/7) Currently hitting .348 with 163 hits in 469 AB's, Lin also has 17 HR's and 107 RBI.
1)His 163 hits currently rank second in the league (behind teammate Wilton Veras's 169) and breaks the old league record of 152 hits held by Lions IF Kuo-Ching Kao (*the league expanded games played to 120 this year vs. 100 in past years). The old rookie mark was 117 H, held by Chih-Wei Shih in '04
2)He currently co-holds the league lead with 107 RBI (tying Bears slugger Chih-Sheng Lin). This also is the current league record (held by former Lions slugger Tilson Brito). The old rookie mark was 72 RBI, set by Tarzan way back in 1999.
3)His .348 BA is the 4th best in the league this year. The highest rookie BA is .342, held by former Elephants slugger/manager Kuang-Hui Wang (1990).
4)His 17 HR tie him for 3rd in the 2009 CPBL season, trailing only Bears sluggers Chih-Sheng Lin (30) and CFC (27). The rookie league mark is held by Ming-Hsiung Liao (18 set in '93 with the now defunct China Times Eagles).
